I once read a quote credited as being part of a Scandinavian proverb that essentially stated, “Only a child or fool pees on themselves for the temporary warmth it provides.”
The meaning of this for one who lives in a cold climate is easy. In the moment you might feel relief, but quickly the solution will cause much more harm than good. The events of this past week dance well to the tune of this saying.
This week, through much upheaval, secrecy, flip-flopping, and bribery, a tax reform bill passed. How bad is it? A bill called by many the worst (fiscally) in the history of congress.
Does this bill provide a small temporary amount of relief to those in the middle income ranks? Yes. Does it deliver crushing blows to our economy, debt, and wealth distribution, while ultimately causing financial distress to those most in need? Also yes.
We now stare down at a bill which also undercuts the ACA, opens wildlife refuges to oil companies, cuts deductions many rely upon, will likely slow appreciation of home values, and helps mega corporations and the hyper wealthy more than all small business and middle/lower income families combined.
When you see or hear someone speaking to positive effects of this bill, and they are not part of the elite wealth of our nation, ask them what they have traded for a moment of temporary warmth. At what cost does that warmth come?
It takes little searching to find list upon list of impacts of this bill. I’m sorry but they are not fake news. Moving forward more and more calculations will process and the impacts of this horrible piece of legislation revealed.
Right now, how warm are you feeling? Me? I’m pretty hot, under the collar.
