Congratulations, we’ve done it. We made it to 2018. Were you able to focus on fitness last year? Ha. Looking back I feel we can all agree the theme word for 2017 was survival. Things most sane and humane people would never have dreamed possible occurred with disturbing frequency. Policies, procedures, and organizations striving to move society forward were dismissed. Things like science, facts, compassion, gave way to screams of fake news and tweets of the day.
Yet here we are. We survived.
For 2018 survival is not, and cannot be, enough. We must strive for fitness.
But you say, “We all know you are a workout nut, you are fit.”
Well yes, at the very surface we must all work to have strong, healthy bodies. I’m finally cleared from a major shoulder surgery and can begin getting my own body strong again. (Goodbye elliptical machine!) Beyond that though, if we are not strong and healthy we cannot fight the fight we know this year must bring. To maintain the rigorous hours of work ahead, fitness of body is critical. I commit to my workouts, healthy eating, and yes, getting some real sleep.
That is but the first step.
Fitness of mind is equally important. This past year did its utmost best to break many of us mentally. It did not succeed. We are here, more motivated, more informed, and more equipped than ever. We must continue. This year reading, writing, and real discussion with others is my commitment. To achieve the goals of 2018 a strong mind is critical for us all.
Fitness is a term not normally applied to home, but I shall. Of course I am not referring to bricks, mortar, and foundation (although that is critical), no I mean does coming home uplift and recharge you, or drain you? I have four children, three still at home. I openly confess to allowing the stress of 2017 carry through my doors. My home was therefore happy, loving, caring, but not recharging. I often failed at making the home bonds stronger. Today I commit to the work required to make my family stronger, my neighborly friendships stronger, my home more “fit”.
November of 2016 crushed the soul of many millions. Belief foundations in our religions, government, friendships, world, crumbled. If your spirit is weak, your fight will fail. For 2018 I challenge us to find that thing which recharges you at the core of your being. A new church family? An extra half hour in the gym? That trashy novel series you love? Binge watching that show which has been in your list for over a year? Playing monopoly and actually following the rules (who does that)? Only you know what strengthens your soul. Go after it this year and watch in amazement as the power it gives you carries to all other areas.
I can think of no other year in my 42 on this blue marble in which humanity as a collective suffered more. Refugees alienated in their time of need. Swaths of people hated for nothing more than a religious text followed or shade of their skin. The poor demonized. The sick dehumanized. Violence domestic and abroad normalized despite thousands upon thousands of deaths. Dozens of natural disasters increasing in intensity. Humaneness and humanity are struggling. Working together fitness of people and society increases, but only through working together. Gazing into the mirror you know you cannot fix all, but each of us has the power to fix one. Each striving to fix one, fixes all.
Today we stare at the amazing possibilities of this thing called 2018. We survived 2017, we shall strengthen and prosper in 2018. Together we can focus not only on our fitness, we can make this great big ball as a whole one fit world.
