Abortion? A hot button topic no matter which side of the discussion you may fall.
We lived in a world where all pregnancies resulted from planning.
We lived in a world where all pregnancies were perfectly healthy.
We lived in a world where all pregnant women had access to perfect healthcare.
We lived in a world where a perfect foster system was in place.
We lived in a world where adoptions were easy.
We lived in a world where rape, incest, and sexual assault did not exist.
We lived in a world with no drug addictions and no children born of it.
We lived in a world where no woman was in an abusive relationship with no easy way out.
We lived in a world where all adults were mentally and emotionally capable of being great parents.
We lived in a world where all women had equal access to education, contraception, and jobs.
We lived in a world where all men accepted the role of father with dignity and enthusiasm.
If we lived in that world abortion would not exist. Laws for or against would be unnecessary.
We do not live in that world. Unplanned pregnancies exist and at high rates, they aren’t all healthy, and as we all are seeing each day we do not have equal access to healthcare. Our foster system and child protective services are a mess. Adoptions are a long, expensive, complicated journey. Sexual assault is a revolting daily reality for far too many women. Our hospitals deal with children born of drug addiction daily. Stories fill our news each day of people who, if we are honest, should never have become parents.
Because of this abortion is a necessary part of our world. They are going to happen. If they are going to happen we must ensure they are in safe, medically sound clinics performed by properly trained medical personnel. The doctors, staff, and patients must feel physically, mentally, and emotionally safe throughout the process. Outlawing abortion goes against each of those needs.
If you want to truly end abortion, look at that list above. It is a checklist that will get us there as a society. No, it isn’t easy, no it isn’t cheap. If abortion is as deep a concern to you as so many make it to be, it is worth the work and expense. You want to end it … make it unnecessary, not illegal.
